What is chemical genetics?
This webpage was produced as an assignment for Genetics 564, an undergraduate capstone course at UW-Madison.
"Chemical genetics is the use of small molecule compounds to perturb a biological system to explore the outcome. Chemical genetics is also used to describe the technique of screening for small molecule modulators. As in classical genetics, the perturbation of a system using small molecules reveals information about the targeted system." [1]
PubChem for chemical genomics
PubChem is an online database which stores information on chemicals and interfering RNAs that have been tested on biological samples. Biologist can use the site by searching for biomolecules, biological processes, and chemicals.

The chemical genetics of NIPBL
Bioactivities search for NIPBL:
Outputs chemcal hits that had an effect on queried protein. Provides which chemical library the chemical came from and some background information about the assay (in this example a description that the positive result was a small interfering RNA). In addition to the information below the result will include the structure of the molecule if it is known and whether or not the molecule had an effect. "Inactive" indicates that the molecule had no effect and "active" indicates that the molecule had an effect [2].

Targets search for NIPBL:
Unfortunately no results came up when both NIPBL and Cornelia de Lange Syndrome were queried in the NCBI PubChem search tool. On my specific aims page I address this issue and propose a chemical genomics experiment aimed at finding chemicals capable of reducing heart defects in CdLS patients.
